Choose?
Box Trucks are specially built trucks used to transport bulky goods. Many
companies who produce goods that are relatively light in weight but occupy volume use these box trucks to transport
their product. Appliances or furniture form the bulk of the goods which are normally transported using box trucks.
Such trucks can also be rented. The regular type of box trucks is about 7 feet long, but one can get smaller or
larger box trucks from special suppliers.
The large auto manufacturers Ford, Dodge and General Motors in the US and Isuzu, Mitsubishi and
Nissan from Japan are the main manufacturers of the standard truck Chassis on which these Box trucks are built. The
truck chassis is used as the base by companies called body builders who manufacture and fix the box body on these
chassis.
Other types of transport vehicle looking very similar to the Box truck are the Cargo Van and GMC
Savana. Both vehicles are used for the same purpose that is transportation of furniture and appliances but GMC
Savanais used for light goods such as parcels and other small cargo... The difference
between the two is more a technical difference than a fundamental difference. The essential fundamental
difference between the two items is that in the box truck a separate independent box is fabricated and fixed
on the truck chassis by a separate company called the body builder as per the specification and requirement
of the customer. In the case of the cargo van the auto manufacturer himself makes the complete cargo van in
his shop. Other minor details are the location of the doors. In the case of the Box truck there is a complete
sliding door at the rear to load and unload the goods (mostly bulky furniture.) Normally in a box truck there
is also a smaller door connecting the driver’s cabin and the rear box.
Box trucks can be rented out for special use. Some special box
trucks are available with refrigeration facility for transporting special cargo. Similarly you can also rent
out special box trucks especially long 40 ft box trucks for transporting special large size cargo. Similarly one
can also rent out special 10 ft long dry box trucks for transporting special cargo which require special dry
atmosphere. Even such Dry box trucks have facility to inject a nitrogen atmosphere inside the box compartment. For
such special service it is not necessary to buy a new box truck, you can hire or rent out suck specialized box
trucks. Because the box fitted on the truck is made separately as an independent unit you can get such special box
trucks fabricated out of Aluminum. GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express are full size vans used similarly like box
trucks. Savana is generally used as a city van for transporting small parcels by courier companies. Upon special
request box trucks are sometimes provided with power steering, power breaks, and even can be air conditioned. Upon
special request some manufacturers supply box trucks with dumping design.
Driving a box truck is harder than driving a car and many States in the US insist on an upgraded
driver license to drive a box truck. The army uses these trucks regularly to transport their essential
equipment.
Generally fleet operators buy new trucks which they give on rent to customer to drive the trucks
themselves like U haul. Truck sale of used box trucks is a regular feature in the US truck market. Such truck sales
are announced and advertised in many local news papers. After all every box truck is actually a commercial truck
used for commercial purpose. Many furniture manufacturers maintain a number of box trucks to make regular
deliveries of their furniture to customers. Once you go to a furniture shop and make a selection of the furniture
that you want and place an order for the furniture, the furniture company starts manufacturing the furniture as per
your order. After the various pieces of furniture are fully fabricated, they use the box trucks to deliver the set
to your home.
Box trucks sometimes look like containers. The main difference between box truck and a container is that the
container can be separated out from the truck by using a crane and kept on the premises of the customer to load and
unload at his convenience. The box truck is like any commercial truck with the box being an integral part of the
truck and the loading and unloading has to be done in the truck itself, but in appearance the box truck looks like
a small container. Also containers are mainly fabricated from steel body whereas the box truck body is made from
any material like aluminum or wood or steel. Usually box trucks are used for transporting goods for small
distances. Containers are even shipped to distant lands and even to other continents through container ships. It is
very rare that people buy box trucks. Mostly these box trucks are rented for a particular job.
